Information about the scratch download
Downloading Scratch on Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, and Android is relatively easy. However, there are some differences between the operating systems and Scratch installation is not possible on all devices.
A free download of Scratch is available in almost all available browsers, but also offline as an app for Windows, Mac OS, Chrome and Android (cf. Fernández/ Vicente, / Galotto/ Martinez-Rech/ Pomares, 2017). The offline versionScratch desktophas better performance and therefore does not require a permanent internet connection. However, the graphical environment is currently not available as a Linux app. The Android version currently only works on tablets and not on Android smartphones. Tutorial: How to download and install on Windows
This is according to a publication of theUniversity of Potsdamthe latest version directly from theMIT edgeare downloaded. An automatic update via the app is unfortunately not possible. Step-by-Step Guide: Download and Install Scratch for MacOS
Download Scratch from the MIT website
The Scratch download, i.e. the offline version (= app), can be downloaded for free directly from the Scratch project page of MIT (Massachusets Institute of Technology). The actual use is also free and there are many free extensions for Scratch, or the development environment (IDE). After installation, you can easily download theencryptionto start.

Download and install Scratch for Windows
For Scratch Download for Windows 10, an installer executable file (.exe) can be downloaded for free directly from the Scratch website. The environment is also free to install from the Microsoft Store. The Microsoft Store can be reached directly in Windows via the sidebar or by clicking on the link to the Microsoft Store on the relevant website (cf. Badger, 2009). The nearly 112MB installation file downloads and installs in minutes.
After the usual double-click, the installation on Windows 10 will begin. The following window should appear:

Download and install MacOS Scratch
Apple users can also download the Scratch directly from the relevant MIT website. Just click "download instantly". Alternatively, you can also download the app from Apple's "App Store".
After downloading and double-clicking the installation file, the following window will appear on your Mac. You now need to click on the app or logo with the mouse and drag it to the blue "Applications" folder. This will start the installation process. In the end, almost 290 MB is used for the installation on your Mac.
If a download already exists on your Mac, you will be prompted to create and overwrite the existing installation. The old version will be replaced with the new one if you confirm. Consequently, an app update on macOS looks like this.
Scratch app for Chrome OS installation
You can easily download the Scratch app for free from the Google Play Store or install it on your Chrome OS device instead. However, it is not possible to get a direct link to download the installation file from MIT's respective website. So you have to go through Google Play. The same goes for an app update in Chrome OS.
Download android scratch
Installing the environment is only possible on an Android tablet, but not on an Android smartphone. The reason for this is probably simply the diminished user interface of a smartphone. This means there is more space for the app on an Android tablet.
Scratch Link app for hardware connections
According to a publication, if you want to access hardware, for example via micro:bit, Lego or Go Direct Force & Acceleration extensions, you have theUniversity of Oldenburgin Windows and Mac OS also the Scratch Link app and an internet connection. So you should also install this.
You can also use it to control and code hardware. Pretty cool!

The Lego WeDo learning concept allows sensors and motors to be linked to a scratch project, i.e. they can be controlled with this application. By building models, this kit and the kits provide ideal conditions for later coding on the PC, as it trains the recognition of relationships and creative problem solving.
By the way, it is not necessary to use ChromeOS as the operating system to install the Link App on Chromebooks. The same goes for Android tablets as well. These also don't require a Link app for hardware access.
You will not find the link extension directly on the Scratch website. Depending on the operating system, you must therefore open the respective app stores here.
A distinction is made between macOS and Windows devices in terms of link extension. For macOS, you can find the extension in the Apple App Store.

Do I need to install an app for the scratch download?
No that is not necessary. You can use the environment with almost any supported browser. All you have to do is go to the dedicated website and click on the top menu item "Develop". The development environment will then open in your browser and you can get started right away. However, in this case you always need a working internet connection to encode with this application.
How much disk space does Scratch download require?
The environment requires about 290 MB on your hard drive as an offline version, i.e. as a downloaded app.
Can you install Scratch on iOS, i.e. on an iPhone or iPad?
Unfortunately, there is no full app for iOS devices, so for an iPad, iPhone or iPod. However, there is a Scratch Junior version that can actually be downloaded from the App Store. However, it is not the full app, but a variant with a considerably more limited number of functions.
Can you download Scratch on an Android phone?
Unfortunately, the application cannot be used as an Android app on an Android mobile phone. This currently only works on an Android tablet. The reason is probably the limited size of the mobile phone screen.
Can Scratch be installed on Linux devices?
Unfortunately, there is no app for installation on Linux devices. Precisely because of the open source nature of Scratch, one could actually assume that. However, there are efforts to develop a Linux version of the offline version in the future. Let's just wait.
