The first big plus of this game is something that is very hard to keep fresh as it completely leaves the game's features behindMMOgenre, but is still one of my biggest selling points for the game and that's my first time playing.
It's really hard to take yourself back in time and remember all the good times you spent with things that are long gone. But if you do that for Final Fantasy, it was the best moments of my life as a longtime console player and single player gamer. Although back in 2014 I came toEorzefor the first time it offered a lot more MMO aspects forced on the player, but more on that later.
However, what really stands out in this game is not even compared to othersMMORPG'son the market, but basically all single player games is how much this world makes sense to itself. And the developers created a universe that drags you along with every new character you meet or places you travel to. It's insanely immersive. And the references to laughter details to the franchise or writing the plot of the story are in a league of their own. Even start inA reborn empiremade perfect sense to me and I absolutely enjoyed the story with classic Final Fantasy elements, especially on the antagonistic side.
Nevertheless, as for many players, Heaven's Ward was that expansion and the moment when the game developed into an absolute masterpiece. The gameplay became complex, smooth and much more fun and the story surrounding each God and theDragonsong warwas just beautifully written.
While still developing the ongoing light motive leading to its conclusion in the recent andWarCraftexpansion, so there had always been a lot of planning to fit the entire world and story, while still developing the subject matter of each expansion around it.
But even aside from all the story-driven content, there's so much to do in this game up to that point: so many outfits and weapons (which you can get byFFXIV Gil) worth collecting, trials and raids to take part in and even the brand new Crystalline ConflictPVPmode is already available at that time.To build,Meeting, build a house,Gold dish...... It's crazy how much content this game offers that even a player likesAsmongoudwas completely stuckHeavenly Departmentbecause there is already so much content to tackle.
Just as I played a good variety of single player games over the past few weeks I realized how good Final Fantasy 14 is where a good old classic likeAwesome, beat the other new games by long shot. EvenKingdom Hearts 3that I absolutely adore many elements didn't come close to the shining times of old Final Fantasies. Not to mention Strangers of Paradise, which was cool but felt super repetitive and boring after a while.
On the other hand, we had theResident Evil 4-remake. This game was great, not because of the epic story or plot, but how well it was made into a very atmospheric horror show. That was the game to have fun with the bare basics of managing your resources, hitting enemies sharply and constantly making Leon look like the badass character he is. And while the entire engine-at-battle system has been pushed to next-gen standards, the mechanics of the game are definitely 2005. To be completely honest, I think this is the best remake available right now.
This is where Final Fantasy 14 comes into play again. This game does not try to reinvent the wheel, but to create the whole vehicle around it. The combat system is a classicWorld of WarCraft-rebrandingwith added strategic elements and the typical Japanese rotation system. But how all this is implemented and introduced in the game is absolutely classic.
I'm still hoping for earlier access to vocational skills and the way the game can be more fun at lower levels. But overall, I have a lot more fun playing these old-functioning combat mechanics than warping my main character from place to place to dodge my enemy's attacks or launch an attack. Think whyElder Ringwas so popular? It took all the good battle-made mechanics and updated them by mixing in some open-world elements.
The gameplay of games likeTactics boogeymanofFinal Fantasy Tactics, while visually they seem dated, they are much more fun than modern day strategy games where real-time decision making and stuff like that.
The one exception that I really liked and would rate as my personal oneGame of the yearbefore 2022A plague story: Requiem. Here, the game's producers and developers have taken the horror genre to another level and while it doesn't feature the grotesque horror of Resident Evil, the gameplay mechanics were simply amazing. The first game where I enjoyed the stealth parts because they made sense. And while for me personally, the story was the game's big selling point, the gameplay felt rewarding and totally satisfying.

This is how games should be designed when the players feel rewarded for their actions and get even more when they go the extra mile. So this leads us back to Heaven's Ward, right? Because walking that extra mile brings you to three more expansions that further develop the main plot with the heartbreaking and genius climax inShadow bringersand perfectly crafted conclusion in Endwalker to become one, if not the greatest storytelling ever created in a game.
But it still offers all the MMO aspects especially if you get to the endgame but also everything the game had in stock before that because Square Enix is insanely good at keeping old content alive and by thinking of past content you can You can always go back in time with your high-level character to relive the moments other players felt when they played the game two expansions ago, except maybe some balance changes.
I mean for example, if you don't care about the recentMandeville-relicsweapons, you can just leaveEurekavisit, gather some friends and try to venture as far as you can into the riddles and mysteries of that very special aisle or you can join theBozjan Southern Frontfor the further development of the war against Galimov and how the whole of schemes and plans took place alongside the great events of Shadowbringers ofEindloper.
There is just so much content that this game offers and only the experienced players and those who have played it patch after patch will come across content drafts. If you are a new player or have not yet explored all these old forms of content, this game is a great must play in my opinion, especially if you like one of the main series of Final Fantasies that is comparable to a quality of 14 or even beaten by it. I mean you can even treat it more and more like a single player game with each patchSquare-Enixconstantly adds party support to dungeons and trials so you don't depend on other players to join in your efforts and story progression.
